Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. - Steve Jobs

Oceanarium

We ate at a restaurant called the Oceanarium. One side of the entire restaurant is taken up with a gigantic two story aquarium. We arrived just in time to watch the first feeding for the day. After the fish were fed, she put her arm under the sting rays mouth & it latched on. She swam right past our table several times with this huge sting ray attached to her arm. It was so cool.

Pali Lookout

After renting our car, the first stop we made was at the Pali Lookout.

La'ie Point

Jake & I stopped off at La'ie Point to each lunch.

The sea arch off La'ie point was created by mother nature during a traditional Hawaii storm.

How would you like that for a home to live in.

As we were finishing up lunch, we noticed a storm was coming in.

That's when a couple of locals showed up. We ran & hid in our car, while the locals set up camp on the rocks. They were setting up o pull an all night fishing night with their friends.

The Polynesian Cultural Center

Sponsered by Dr. Pepper.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is an amazing experience. We enjoyed it so much that we went back for a second day.

There are 6 different villages that you can visit. Each village has a show and activities that you can participate in. There's spear throwing, cooking using banana leaves & fire made from coconut husks, braiding with the coconut husk, & anything else you can possibly imagine to do with a coconut.

You can also go on a canoe ride around all the villages.

Jake & I got tatted up while we were there.

Nearly everything in the villages are authentic. I can't imagine how long it took to create everything by hand.

The Canoe Pageant

At 2pm, all of the villages shut down in preparation for the canoe pageant. Each village comes out on a canoe & performs their native dances as they sing.

Hawaii

Aotearoa. Otherwise known as New Zealand.

Tonga

Samoa

The Samoan's are known as the happy people. Every time they demonstrated the Samoan culture, there was always pranks, tricks, & humor involved.

Fiji

Tahiti

At the end of the show, all of the boats come out once again. They are lead by this boat which represents the royalty of the polynesian culture.

Village Shows

You visit 6 different villages while you are there. The Tongan village was all about the drums.

Of course we have to have a little audience participation. This Japanese man was halarious. The Tongan performer told him to say "are you ready," in japanese and the little guy in the grass skirt yelled, "Are you ready in japanese!" So funny.

The guy in the straw hat was another audience member. The performer did a huge long drum set & then spoke in tongan for about 30 seconds. He then turned to the guy in the hat & said "Now you repeat." The guy sat there looking stunned for a minute and the suddenly bust out with "Who let the dogs out. Who, who, who, who" and then banged the drums in tune. We were all laughing so hard we had tears rolling down our faces. The performer could hardly get his composure back he was laughing so hard.

This is the village of Samoa. This is one of the funniest performers I've ever seen. He used a lot of humor as he demonstrated how to open a coconut & light a fire using a coconut. He also put the fire out with his foot. Ouch.

We got to see some amazing tree coconut tree climbing.

We enjoyed the Samoan show so much, we went back for a second round. By the way, it's illegal in Hawaii to take a picture without the hang loose sign.

The Luau

After touring the villages, we headed to the luau for dinner. It fun, but pretty processed. Tight space, sitting with strangers, getting herded through a buffet line.

The band played for the luau and then for the entire Horizons show that we saw that evening.

We had lots of fun entertainment.

I got to lei Jake before we entered the luau.

Preview to Horizons Show

After the Luau, we headed off to the evening show called Horizons. The show is a spectacular event showing off Polynesian dancing, singing, & a fire knife dancing. I wasn't able to get any shots of the show, but here are a couple of the guys practicing their fire dancing.

Quirks

Alright. My friend Christina tagged me to write six quirks about myself. Christina had a hard time coming up with a 6th quirk. I’m afraid I’m going to have a hard time limiting myself to 6 quirks.

Most of you are probably pretty familiar with my quirks, but here it goes.

1. I like to sort, dissect, & categorize my food. If it’s colored candy, I like to put in piles of each color. Then I have to find the color that has the least amount in it. Then I create piles based on the amount of candy in the color. For example, if I have 4 red skittles and 6 yellow skittles, & 8 green skittles. Then I will create a pull out 4 red skittles, 4 yellow skittles, & 4 green skittles. Then I go through the same process with the left over skittle pile. Once I get down to skittles that don’t have a matching family, I can eat those however I want. The other skittles I like to color coordinate or eat a matching pair. If they are matching though, I like to suck on them. No chewing there. If the food I’m eating is more of a bread item like Hostess cup cakes or Nutrigrain bars, I like to dissect it differently. I usually pull the sides off, dissect the top from the bottom, throw out the middle if it’s jelly, save it if it’s whip cream & then eat it in the order of worst part to best part. You always have to save the best part for last.

2. I have a fear of anything that is old, dusty, or antique. In general, this includes people as well. When I go into an old person’s home I have to hold my breath & I don’t like sitting on their couches or touching their stuff. I’m pretty sure this fear goes back to my Grandma Derrick. She suffered from Alzheimer’s in the later years of her life. I can recall pouring a bowl of shredded wheat in her house as a young child. I eating the bowl of cereal when I noticed that my shredded wheat was swimming on it’s own. My brother Jon & I discovered that our so called shredded wheat was actually a bowl full of weevils. I believe that it was at this point that my fear of eating anything older than 2-3 days old set in as well.

3. I really can’t stand it if someone farts in my house. I have a standing rule that if you have to fart, you have to go do it in the bathroom. I feel like the fart is going to seep into my clothes, into my couch and my skin & it will stay there forever. If I’m eating food, I have to cover my food & run as fast as I can. If I don’t get out in time, I can’t eat the food as it has been tainted by passed gas.

4. I can’t wear other people’s stuff unless I know them really well or I know that they have good cleanly habits. If I’m cold & someone offers me a jacket, I can’t accept it unless I trust them & know them well. I’d rather freeze then wear someone’s jacket or borrow a blanket from someone that I don’t trust. Sometimes I’m forced to wear it because they are so insistent that they put it on me without my permission. At this point I have to stop breathing through my nose and I hold very still so it will touch me as little as possible. I just don’t like other people’s stuff touching me unless I know & trust their hygiene. No real fear of germs, just a weird quirk.

5. I can’t sleep if Jake & I are face to face in bed. If I’m facing the middle of the bed and he rolls over & faces me, I’ll wake up instantly & then I have to roll over. I just don’t like breath on me. I’m like a cat. If you blow on their face, they start to freak out. I really hate lipstick breath as well. It’s just not cool.

6. My final quirk is the way I have to sleep. In order to fall asleep, I have to lie on my side, wrap my hair around the top of my head so it’s not on my neck. I have to pull & cross my pinkie toes towards my big toe. It’s a matter of getting the right sensation. I do this during the day as well. If I’m sitting, laying, reading, studying, or even making out with Jake, I have to have my pinkie tossed crossed in just the perfect way to get the right sensation. The final component to a restful nights sleep is my ear. I have to fold my ear toward my head & the lay down on my pillow. I sleep like this all night. Often when I wake up in the morning, my ear will be stuck to the side of my head.

I’m sure some of those quirks sound a little clinical. But what am I if not a little bit odd.

Diamond Head

On Thursday, we decided to go for a hike up Diamond Head.

One of the cool things that we learned was that Diamond Head was used as a military look out point. As you can see in the picture, they built military stations into the volcano.

At the beginning of the trail they have pretty much the only resting spots on the hike. It didn't make a lot of sense to us to put them at the beginning.

Here we go.

Here's some stairs...

....more stairs...

A mountain full of switchback to climb.

...stairs..

We had to crawl out of this little look out point.

Finally we reached the top.

We camped out up top & ate some sandwiches and chips.

The view.

I'd say the hike was worth it.

Pondering whether or not I want to hike down or call in some air support to lift me out.

Jake pondering how in the heck he's going to crawl under there to get off the top of the volcano. (Notice the cover is painted in camo.)

Success!

Switchbacks

Upon returning to our hotel, Jake found some more stairs to climb.

Becky found an escalator. Sucka!
