We took a boat ride over to the US Arizona Memorial. On the way, you pass the US Missouri which is the last battle ship that was ever built.
This is a picture of what the US Arizona memorial looks like. The white strip going across the boat is the actual memorial. You stand in side of this memorial & when you look out into the water you can see the sunken boat beneath your feet. Within the boat are the graves of over 900 men who were killed when the battleship was hit. The red parts on the map depict that part of the boat that are sticking out of the water.
You can see that the memorial sags in the middle. This is to represent that Pearl Harbor was the lowest of low times. You can also see that the memorial curves up. This is to represent the stregnth that America has and the rise of the country to enter and end WWII.
Gun Turret.
You can still see and smell all of the oil from the ship that is in the water. They have left the oil there on purpose to keep the grave of the Arizona sacred and true to what happened.
Several people brought and scattered flowers over the memorial.
Inside the memorial is a wall with all of the names of the men who died on the Arizona. You can see on the wall that there are multiple soldiers with the same last name. The guide said that many of the men who were killed were brothers, cousins, & father & son.
You can take an audio guided tour of all of the events that lead up to the Pearl Harbor attack. You get to hear from men who survived the explosion on the Arizona and who were trapped inside the Oklahoma for over 48 hours but were rescued. It's an amazing feeling to listen to the events and stories on your headphones while you stare out at the harbor.
One of the more interesting parts of the memorial is all of the Japanese tourist that visit Pearl Harbor. You spend an entire morning learning the history of why the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and you're in a room full of Japanese tourist listening to the same thing. You're thinking, you bombed us & we nuked you & here we are mourning together as friends. It's eye opening.
